What are the official themes of the exam?
The official highway-code programme is structured into ten broad themes: road traffic, the driver, the road, other road users, miscellaneous notions (regulations, documents…), first aid, getting in and out of the vehicle, mechanics and equipment, passenger and vehicle safety, and the environment. The 40 exam questions are distributed across these themes, with no fixed guaranteed number per theme. The official framework is published by the road-safety authority (securite-routiere.gouv.fr).
What does each major theme cover?
“Traffic” gathers road signs, priorities, intersections, speeds and overtaking rules. “The driver” deals with eyesight, fatigue, alcohol, medication and compulsory documents. “The road” covers special conditions: night, rain, fog, motorway, tunnel. “Other road users” addresses pedestrians, cyclists, two-wheelers and public transport. Then come first aid, mechanics and safety equipment, passenger safety and the environment. Each theme blends rules to know with good reflexes to adopt.
How do the themes translate into the exam?
The exam has 40 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 35 correct answers to pass — that is, 5 mistakes allowed at most. The questions draw on the full set of official themes, each illustrated by a photo or a short video of a road situation. No theme is “optional”: one series may lean more on priorities one day, on mechanics another. Revising every theme, neglecting none, is therefore the only reliable strategy (securite-routiere.gouv.fr).
