What does the “Speed limit 50 km/h” sign mean?

The “Speed limit 50 km/h” sign belongs to the “Prohibition” family of the French highway code. Prohibitory signs are round with a red border. They forbid a manoeuvre or behaviour — excess speed, overtaking, parking, access — until the restriction is lifted.
